weather worries during storage

I'm staying in the Rio Grande Valley with my Golden Retriever, Sam. It will be our first winter and I have some concerns. After the Hurricane in July and some flooding this month, I'm worried that maybe I should store my trailer somewhere farther inland or to the va north. Does anyone know of a good storage place in central or west Texas? Or maybe my worries are unfounded?

I screwed up again.

In an effort to avoid a long trip to the dealer and having to wait all day while they winterized my Alumascape last fall, my wife and I did it ourselves. What a mistake. I missed one of three low point drains, so everything above it must have froze solid. None of the intake water valves work. The water comes gushing out, so now I'll have to take it in and have it fixed. I suspect it will cost a bunch.
I don't plan to use the trailer until October when I will haul it to a permenent spot in the RGV, texas. If the repair estimate is too costly, I thought I would just hook up the city water since that will be all I would need anyway. Any guesses as to what I'm up against. The tanks won't fill and the lines don't get any water, it just drains out somewhere above the low point.

RE: Hydraulic slides vs Electric slides

As I understand it, hydraulic slides drift when in transit and need to be locked down. I full timed for three years with a Jayco with electric slides and never had the need to lock them in.

RE: Reasonably light weight fiver with king size bed

Have you considered a double slide TT. That would put you way under your GVWR and also free up your bed.

RE: Most Dogs

I traveled full time with my boxer named Benny. He was great, loved everbody and any animal. He's gone now and I have since replaced him with a golden retriever. My new wife thought boxers were scary and ugly. No matter of convincing would win her over to a boxer pup.
I tend to find problems getting into a lot of the campgrounds with a large dog. It seems more and more of them don't allow pets over 20 lbs.

A good reason to go with a toy hauler.

safe winter storage on site

I plan to spend six months at shady acres, Donna, tx. How safe (theft-wise)do think it is to leave my trailer on site for the summer months when I'm not there. Is this something most winter Texans do? I have a new 5th wheel so I'm a little concerned.

RE: What's Your Future RV Prediction?

If you wait to buy that dream rig the price will come down enough to buy gobs of gas.
Its all about survival. I bought my 06 quad slide 5th wheel to park for the winters down south. Finally, I'm retired and will haul it to a campground this October where it will be locked in on a yearly basis. RV's are still viable as second homes since they require little maintenance when parked, and you don't pay taxes.
My deisel truck is new, but I'm selling it and getting a fuel efficient car to shuttle back and forth with. Scooters that get close to 100 mi to the gallon sell for under $2000. The plan is to buy two and leave one home and the other at the camgsite.
In the future, I hope to buy a nice popop pulled by a hybrid deisel for traveling.

trailsaver hitch

Does anyone own a trailsaver hitch?
I went to hook up the 5 wheel and couldn't get the air bags inside the hitch to fill up. I have the compressor option with the automatic fill. I love the hitch. It does what its advertised to do. I was also wondering if its OK to pull without air in the airbags until I get it fixed?

RE: Quartzite, Az.

I boondocked in Quartsite for about a month in '86 during the month of Nov. The weather was great but finding water was hard. The BLM tap went dry by around 9am. You had to line up real early if you wanted enough water pressure to fill up at least partially. The problem might have been remedied since then. The townies at the time didn't take too kindly to RVer's asking for their water either.
If I ever decided to go there again, it would only be for a few days and I'd stay at a private campground if I did.

winterizing without heat.

Is it possible to shut off the heat in the house if all the water is drained from the house and the traps filled with RV antifreeze the same way we winterize our RV's? Here in Pa we get a hard freeze that can last a few weeks at a time. What am I not seeing? I would like to head out this coming winter without having to spend anything to heat an empty house. One month I paid $275. That could play a month in a campground. Thanks for your help.

RE: Too much for my truck?

11 k sounds a little light for a 36 ft'er. Have it weighed. I suspect that it might come in around 12-13. Unless it doesn't have any slides.

Anyone know of a campground in the boulder city area that has a reasonable monthly rate? All I can find on the web are expensive resorts.

RE: over-weight for sure.

Thanks for all the imput. I feel relieved from the possitive feedback. My truck came with G rated tires, so I'm OK there. I think I'm going for a set of air bags to keep the headlights straight.
I don't carry anything in the bed and only light lawn stuff in the understorage. Anything inside that seems heavy I'll lay over the rear axles.

over-weight for sure.

I'm planning to tow my 37 ft'er to Alamogordo, NM. from Scranton, Pa. next winter, one way and then left there in a permanent CG. The trailer is between 14,000 & 15,000 lbs. I haven't weighed it yet. I'm pulling with an '08 dodge 3/4 diesel, reg cab, auto, 410 rear which has a 14,000 lb rating.
I know I'm overweight and somewhere in this forum I read that CHIP (Cal. hwy patrol) pulled an RV 5th wheel combo over and had it weighed. The truck was over its combined weight rating by about 2,000 lbs. As I remember it, the trailer was impounded on the spot and the driver left to find a commercial hauler for the rest of his trip.
Since I don't plan to go all the way to Calif., has anyone else heard of a similar story in another state.

Trail Saver hitch.

Does anyone have a Trailsaver 5 wh. hitch from Hensley? I guess I should have asked for an opinion before I bought the hitch, but at the time when I was at the Harrisburg rv show last Sept. it looked like a sound investment and still does. It's being installed this Friday and I'm looking forward to hitching up the trailer for a trial run. The hitch is designed with an airbag and a compressor controlled (optional) from the dash.
How do you like the hitch for hooking up and performance? I had a Hitchiker before and it kept getting jambed up upon disengagement. Fore and aft banging wasn't too severe, but was an annoyance nonetheless.
